What is an Antecedent? ๐ค
An antecedent is the word, phrase, or clause that a pronoun refers to. Think of it as the "original" noun that gives the pronoun its meaning.
Without an antecedent, a pronoun is just a meaningless shell.
"Adara loves coffee because she needs energy."
๐ Adara is the Antecedent.
๐ She is the Pronoun.

The Golden Rule: Agreement ๐ค
The Antecedent and the Pronoun must agree (match) in three key areas. If they don't, the sentence falls apart!
Number
Singular antecedents need singular pronouns. Plural antecedents need plural pronouns.
โ The dog finished their bone.
โ The dog finished its bone.
Gender
Masculine, feminine, or neutral antecedents require matching pronouns.
โ Mr. Smith lost her hat.
โ Mr. Smith lost his hat.
Person
Don't switch points of view! Keep 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person consistent.
โ When one tries, you succeed.
โ When one tries, one succeeds.
